The opening month and year are explicitly given in the first chapter, and by following the story we can usually determine the month in which each event happened. In only a few cases can we tell much more than that.

But there's a serious problem that admits of no explanation: In no fewer than three places, the climactic events of mid to late 1457 are said to be "two years" after the parting of Columbo and Samaritana in September 1456! Unless a year is hiding somewhere (or I've made a mistake) this statement is wrong in each place it appears.
